Russian icon of Christ in Majesty surrounded by saints - Extended Deesis icon - Russia, 19th century
Large Russian icon depicting Christ in Majesty seated on a throne, blessing with his right hand and holding the opened Gospel. He is surrounded by the Virgin, Saint John the Forerunner and an assembly of saints among whom Saint Helen, Saint Alexis, Saint Andrew, Saint Paul, Saint Tatiana, Saint Alexandra and Saint Theodora, identified by their inscriptions in Slavonic.
This solemn composition, richly enhanced with gold backgrounds, illustrates the Russian Orthodox iconographic tradition of the 19th century.
Condition: wear, paint losses, craquelure and old restorations visible, in keeping with the age of the work. Please refer to the photographs, which are an integral part of the description.
