Bulgaria. - 500 Lev 1922 - Pick 39a

Large-format Bulgarian banknote with a face value of 500 Leva, issued by the Bulgarian National Bank in 1922. This classic paper money issue belongs to the early Bulgarian lev period and is catalogued as Pick 39a. The note has an imposing horizontal format, refined engraved detail and a strong visual presence typical of high-denomination European banknotes from the interwar period.

The obverse is printed in a rich multicolour design, with the Bulgarian coat of arms placed prominently in the centre, flanked by large ornamental “500” denomination panels. The background includes layered guilloche patterns, geometric borders, decorative rosettes and repeated denomination elements. The lower section bears the printed date 1922 and the imprint of the American Bank Note Company, reflecting the high-quality engraving and production standards associated with this issue.

The reverse is printed mainly in blue tones and features an attractive harbour scene with ships, railway tracks, cargo and dockside details. The composition is framed by elaborate ornamental panels, large “500” denomination medallions and the French inscription “Banque Nationale de Bulgarie”. The visible serial number is Ж006301, printed in red on both sides of the obverse.

The banknote remains visually attractive, with strong design definition and appealing colour retention. Visible condition details include a central vertical fold, light handling creases, age toning, small stains, minor margin wear, softened corners and a small edge fold on the left side. Despite these signs of circulation, the note presents well and retains notable collector appeal as a classic Bulgarian 500 Leva issue from 1922.
