Description from the seller
Foo Lion Sculpture, Glazed Ceramic, mid-20th century - China
Interesting sculpture made in China during the 20th century. Made of glazed ceramic, the white tone lends a classic character that blends with a dynamic and modern design evident in its curves. The figure depicts the lion in a frontal pose, with its mouth open and a protective expression.
The shapes of the whiskers add dynamism and movement, demonstrating the sculptor’s mastery of the material and attention to detail. One of the paws rests on a decorated sphere, a symbol of control and authority. The pedestal incorporates geometric and floral motifs, and the piece is presented on a dark wooden base that enhances its presence and creates a contrast between materials and tones.
The Foo lions are an iconic Buddhist-origin motif that, as mentioned previously, symbolize protection. Ancient Chinese dynasties placed large sculptures of these animals at the doors of their residences as a way to ward off evil and defend the law.
