An original Amlash terracotta vessel from circa the 1st Millennium BC, measuring 16.5 cm high by 11.2 cm wide, with a cylindrical body, carinated base, tall funnel neck and wide mouth, decorated by a ridge around the neck and a groove at the widest part, and in good condition.
Description from the seller
A finely modelled Amlash terracotta vessel. The container features a cylindrical body, with a carinated base, leading to a tall funnel neck and wide mouth. A ridge decorates the body of the vessel around the neck, and a groove circles the widest part of the body. The vessel sits on a short circular foot. Earthly encrustations throughout the surface.
The term ‘Amlash Culture’, has generally been used to designate material cultures excavated at Gilan, an archaeological site of on the southern shore of the Caspian sea, and refers to a group of Iron Age pottery and metal executions with a strong visual character. Amlash terracotta vessels , such as this fine example, might have been inspired by paralleled metal wares of the same period, and were used in funeral libation contexts, ritual occasions and in everyday life.
