Export porcelain Chinese blue-and-white fish plate for export
Circular plate with a lip
China (Jingdezhen), destined for the European export market (East India Company)
Qing Dynasty, Qianlong period (1736–1795), circa 1750–1760
Porcelain
Under-glaze blue decoration with overglaze enamels of the Rose Family (on the glaze) and gilt highlights
Diameter: 23.6 cm; Height: 3.3 cm

The central medallion presents a naturalistic, fluid composition depicting five carp and goldfish (jinyu) swimming among fine aquatic weeds, painted in black ink and pale greenish-blue, enriched with small lotus flowers or scattered pink buds. The fish are treated with a wide variety of techniques and colors. Two carps are highlighted with a bright iron-red enamel with finely traced scale details. Two other fish display opaque white or very pale pink enamel, slightly raised in faqua (faience) technique, giving a subtle relief to the scales. The last fish bears a violet/pink-purple gradient enamel characteristic of the Rose Family palette.

The rim is adorned with four broad, stylized scrolls/foliage painted in underglaze blue (China blue), creating a striking contrast with the center’s vibrant enamels. The border edge features a geometric frieze inspired by European designs (sometimes attributed to so-called
"Du Paquier" or late Régence/Rococo styles), painted in gold on a ferric red ground, delimiting the outer circumference. The back of the rim is left white, typical of productions from this period.

In China, the goldfish is a homophone of "abundant gold" or "gold and jade." The depiction of several carps swimming together expresses wishes for material wealth, academic success (the carp leaping the dragon gate), and continuous abundance (niannian youyu).

Condition: Fresh and bright Rose Family enamels and gilding on the rim. Slight wear from normal use on the outer gilded edge. UV light examination reveals a crack. A small nibble is visible on the outer edge of the rim (measuring a few millimeters). The foot and the reverse show no reign mark, which is typical for export service pieces.

Provenance: Kanaka The Collection, Portugal
