General Description

Religious carved sculpture in polychromed wood representing Saint John the Evangelist, attributed to the Spanish school of the late 15th or early 16th century. The work shows features typical of late Gothic: frontal composition, marked stylization of forms, and a serene, devotional expression.

Artisanal hand-carved in solid wood, it retains traces of its original polychromy and an ancient patina that evidences its long history. The back side remains barely worked, a common characteristic of sculptures intended for altarpieces or niches.

The piece shows wear, losses of polychromy, cracks due to aging of the wood, ancient wood-borer holes, and old restorations, elements visible in the photographs and compatible with a work of great antiquity.

It is a sculpture of notable interest to collectors of religious imagery and Spanish medieval art.
