Decorative ornament - Netherlands - Horse pendant clasp

An authentic and characterful component of a horse harness / horse medallion hardware from the first half of the 20th century, made in heavy brown leather and richly adorned with four original brass horse brasses. The decorations show classic rural motifs, including a lion, a deer, a bull’s head and a horse’s head in a horseshoe. Together they form a particularly decorative whole with a beautiful, well-worn appearance.

Brass horse ornament plates (horse brasses) were originally attached to the tack of work and draft horses. They served not only as decoration but also symbolized pride, prosperity and protection. From the second half of the 19th century well into the first half of the 20th century, such adornments were a familiar sight on farmyards, at breweries, and during processions and agricultural fairs, especially in England, but also elsewhere in Europe. Today original pieces are sought-after collectibles and decorative wall pieces.

This piece possesses a gorgeous, authentic patina. The leather shows clear signs of age, wear and drying, appropriate for an object used about a hundred years ago. It is precisely these signs of use that emphasize the original character and history of the object. The brass ornaments are beautifully preserved and give the whole a warm look.
