Ewer
Canton porcelain
China, Guangdong Province
Qing Dynasty, late 19th century
36 cm x 20 cm x 20 cm
This substantial ewer, with a slender pear-shaped body, a narrowed neck and an S-shaped spout, and a tall arched handle, is part of the so-called "famille rose" decorative repertoire, typical of Canton workshops in the second half of the 19th century aimed at both the domestic market and export.
The decoration, extremely rich, combines an emerald green foliate scrolling background punctuated by pink flowers and butterflies, with polylobed reserves. These host figurative scenes of interior figures (young women, scholars and servants in pavilions), alternating with naturalistic medallions displaying birds, flowers and insects. The whole is executed in opaque enamels enhanced with gold, in a technique characteristic of Canton productions. The lip and some borders are outlined with a fine gold thread.
The base presents a broad unmarked annular foot, white glaze with a slightly satin sheen, consistent with utilitarian and decorative pieces of this period.
Condition: wear from use and gilt rubbing. Good condition! Observed under UV.
Provenance: Portuguese Collection - Kanaka The Collection
Shipping: Shipped with UPS / CTT with insurance and tracking
