"Otto Wagner was born in the Vienna district of Penzing. He studied in Berlin and Vienna. After working for a while as a bricklayer, he began working as an architect. His first buildings were erected in a historicist style. In the late 1880s he became an advocate of realism. In 1890 he designed an urban plan for Vienna, but only the railroad network of the Wiener Stadtbahn was actually realized. In 1894 he became a professor of architecture at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. In 1896 he published the book *Modern Architecture*, in which he outlined his ideas about the role of the architect; this work was based on his first lecture at the academy. He argued for an architecture based on modern materials and modern construction methods. In 1897 he joined Gustav Klimt, Joseph Maria Olbrich, Josef Hoffmann and Koloman Moser, shortly after they founded the artists’ group the Vienna Secession. He died in 1918 in Vienna".
