Description from the seller

Grande Caraffa da Claret / Decanter Jugendstil Art Nouveau - WMF Model 191 - c. 1905 (42 cm)
Splendid and majestic wine decanter in perfect Art Nouveau / Jugendstil style, produced by the renowned German manufacture WMF (Württembergische Metallwarenfabrik) around 1905. This extraordinary design with organic, sinuous lines is the work of sculptor Albert Mayer and is cataloged as Model no. 191 by the manufacturer. The slender conical body is made of fine emerald green crystal glass, set into a sumptuous chrome-plated pewter mount. The decorative perforated base is finely carved on both sides with the relief profile of a girl/nymph with long wavy hair interwoven with floral motifs. The elegant “whip” handle connects to the neck and the openable upper lid, the latter topped with a perforated knob. The internal piston mechanism is present and original.
Excellent general antique condition. The green glass body is fully intact, without inclusions, cracks, or chips. The metal framework is solid and the lid hinge operates perfectly. Beautiful original patina.
Height: 42 cm. Weight: 1626 g.
Hallmarks on the base: Factory mark “WMF” in a rectangle (1900-1910 period), hallmark “I/O” (normal thickness of silver plating), and “as” (Antique Silver finish, original patina in the recesses of the decoration).
Note for collectors: In the same auction session there is a second WMF lot coordinated with the same identical Art Nouveau sculptural design, in the variant with a transparent glass body (white). This is the smaller liquor/port decanter with a removable original interlocking stopper, height 24 cm and weight 426 g. An exceptional opportunity to acquire two splendid variants in size and color coordinated with the same iconic series.
