This hand-carved tripod chair is a traditional Ethiopian "Jimma" chair, typically crafted from a single block of wood and featuring a high backrest with geometric cutouts.
These chairs often held ceremonial significance, sometimes used during the enthronement of kings. The chair is carved from a single piece of hard wood and features three sturdy legs and a wraparound backrest, with a nice patina and worn edges it is smooth from use.
Collected in Ethiopia in the 1990's it is most likely from between 1930-1950.
The chair weighs 9.4 kg. The height is 99cm with the seat at 40cm. The seating inside is 32cm in width.
The chair will be carefully packed and shipped with insurance.
