Description from the seller
Czechoslovakia. 1 Dukat 1931, gold.
Attractive and well-preserved Czechoslovak 1 Dukat from 1931, struck in high-purity gold and featuring one of the most recognizable designs of interwar Czechoslovak coinage. The obverse depicts St. Wenceslas standing facing, wearing armor and holding a banner and shield. Around the figure is the inscription “Nedej zahynouti nám i budoucím,” a historically significant Czech motto meaning roughly “Do not let us perish, nor those yet to come.” The reverse shows the crowned Czech lion within a shield, surrounded by the legend “Republika Československá,” with the date 1931 below.
This example presents very well, with strong overall detail and good remaining sharpness across the main design elements. The figure of St. Wenceslas is clear and well defined, with visible detail in the armor, banner, shield, and facial features. The reverse lion is also well preserved, with clear contours, visible heraldic detail, and an attractive overall appearance. The legends remain fully readable, the date is clear, and the beaded borders are well struck and largely complete.
The coin shows only light signs of handling, consistent with a carefully kept gold piece in good collectible condition. It does not appear heavily worn from the images. The surfaces retain a pleasing appearance, and the coin has strong eye appeal for the type. Any minor marks or softness appear consistent with normal handling rather than heavy circulation. Overall, this is a presentable and desirable example of the 1931 Czechoslovak ducat.
The Czechoslovak ducat series is popular among collectors due to its elegant national design, historical importance, and high gold purity. These coins were produced during the First Czechoslovak Republic and are closely associated with Central European gold coinage between the two World Wars. The use of St. Wenceslas gives the coin strong cultural and historical significance, while the Czech lion on the reverse connects the issue directly to the national identity of Czechoslovakia.
Struck in .986 fine gold, the 1 Dukat is a small but substantial gold coin with both bullion and numismatic appeal. It is collected not only for its gold content, but also for its design quality, historical context, and continued demand among collectors of European gold coins.
