Description from the seller

A remarkable early photobook by Nobuyoshi Araki, published by Shinchosha in 1991. Although issued in the early 1990s, the work itself dates back to 1965, when Araki was 25 years old and working as an advertising photographer at Dentsu.
Jeanne was originally made as a private photobook, with photographs pasted directly into four scrapbooks under the title Gemi: La Passion de Jeanne d’Arc. The original was later lost, but film copies of all the pages were rediscovered about twenty-five years later, leading to this published edition.
Inspired by Carl Theodor Dreyer’s film The Passion of Joan of Arc, the book combines cinematic drama, experimental montage, and the raw handmade quality of a scrapbook. Its bold black-and-white images reveal the energy of 1960s Japan and the early formation of Araki’s highly personal visual language.
An important and collectible title for admirers of Japanese photography, experimental photobooks, and Nobuyoshi Araki’s early work.
Softcover with slipcase and obi, published by Shinchosha, Tokyo, 1991. 160 pages.

CONDITION
The obi has some sunning and tears. There is a slight bump to the lower part of the spine of the book itself. Overall, the book is in very good condition.

SHIPPING
Shipped via EMS or DHL. Delivery is available within one week, with a tracking number provided.

Seller's Story

Totodo is a curated antiquarian bookstore based in Japan, dedicated to art books, photography, exhibition catalogues, artist publications, and rare out-of-print titles. Rather than operating as a volume-driven reseller, we approach bookselling as a form of editorial practice. Each work is carefully selected for its artistic significance, historical context, and lasting relevance, with an emphasis on titles that have shaped visual culture and contemporary thought. Drawing from decades of experience in the Japanese art book ecosystem, as well as relationships with collectors, estates, and specialized distributors, we are able to present material that is both culturally important and increasingly scarce in the international market. We maintain rigorous standards for condition assessment and bibliographic accuracy, and every item is securely packaged for international shipment. Our aim is to provide collectors and institutions with thoughtfully chosen works, professional service, and complete transparency.
