Skull and crossed tibias (Memento Mori) - 19th century - Rome - Private Collection.
Rare funerary or liturgical decorative item painted on metal depicting a skull surmounting two crossed tibias, mounted on a lozenge-shaped panel.
According to the ancient annotation kept on the reverse, this piece would originate from one of the large chandeliers arranged around the catafalque during Catholic funeral ceremonies before the liturgical reforms of Vatican II.
The candles used were in yellow wax.
Good condition with wear, chips and signs of aging consistent with its age and use. Provenance: former Brussels gallery (handwritten label on the reverse).
