Description from the seller
Antique Small Awl/Punterolo for Cabinetmaking with a T-shaped Handle in Cow Bone – Convertible into a Mini Corkscrew for Perfume/Pharmacy – With Leather Sheath – Late 19th / Early 20th Century
Elegant and curious small multifunctional antique tool, dating from the late 19th or early 20th century.
The object presents a refined ergonomic T-shaped handle made of white cow bone, firmly affixed to the steel frame by two small metal rivets (visible in photo 1 and photo 2). The metal part is finely turned near the handle and continues with a straight shank ending in a screw-threaded tip (succhiello).
Dual historical and eclectic use:
- Cabinetmaking/artisan woodworking tool: Used to precisely create pilot holes in noble wood before inserting small screws.
- Toilet or pharmacy use: Given its miniature size, this type of tool was frequently used in the daily life of the bourgeoisie of the era to uncork bottles of perfume, essences, or medicines sealed with small cork stoppers.
The object is complete with its original protective leather sheath in tan color with visible perimeter stitching (see photo 1), a rare detail that has preserved the tip over the decades.
A highly decorative collectible piece, perfect for collectors of antique tools, lovers of old desk/vanity items, or to enrich a Wunderkammer display.
Conditions
Excellent overall condition. The bone handle is intact, smooth, free of cracks or breaks, with a splendid natural ivory patina. The steel is solid, with very light and normal signs of aging that attest to its authenticity and period. The leather sheath is flexible and in excellent preserved condition.
