Central Asian rug, circa 1920. Old rugs from Khotan come from the ancient city of Khotan, located in the Central Asian region, formerly known as Eastern Turkestan or Samarkand. Its strategic location between China, Europe and the Mediterranean made it a dynamic trading hub, with significant textile production, especially silk and carpets. These rugs were thus heavily influenced by Asian and Persian cultures, blending Chinese motifs with a rich palette of earth tones, reds, golds, browns and greens, typical of classical Persian rugs.
