Kanaga Dogon mask. This mask, one of the most important among the Dogon, was used in funeral rites. The members of the Awa company dance with the masks on the roof of the mausoleum, to accompany the heart (nyama) of the deceased to its eternal rest and, at the same time, to protect it from the forces of evil that it could unleash. Furthermore, the Kanaga mask is also used to protect hunters from revenge exercised on the game they have slain.
