Description from the seller
Pair of wall sconces (originally conceived as candle-holders) with hand-hammered brass sheet, featuring late Baroque decorative motifs. The front is worked in hand-hammered and chased brass sheet, with acanthus leaf motifs, lateral rosettes and a densely punched background. At the center of each piece is inserted a small oval mirror, historically used to reflect and amplify the flame light. The structure and execution details suggest an estimated date between the late 18th and early 19th century.
Around the mid-20th century the objects were electrified for modern use. The intervention involved inserting white lampholders (E14 socket) on metal tubes and drilling through the wooden base to pass the brown two-conductor electrical cable.
Dimensions (per piece): Height: 36 cm; Width: 34 cm; Thickness: about 3 cm.
Condition and defects (as seen in photos):
- Silvering wear: Original finish worn by time, with the brass underneath visible on the reliefs (bicolor patina).
- Mirror oxidation: Central panes with widespread dark speckling and natural aging-induced opacification.
- Back marks: Wooden support and plaster backing with abrasions, color losses, and aging signs.
- Irregularities of the plate: Slight deformations and period asymmetries in the hand-hammered brass sheet.
- Outdated electrical installation: Wiring and lampholder dating to the mid-20th century, not recently revised.
Careful packing and tracked professional shipping.
