A Victorian cast iron umbrella and walking stick stand dating from 1850–1900, in excellent condition, with a 62 cm height, 22 cm width, and 20 cm depth, finished in black with ornate Rococo Revival detailing and a shell drip tray.
Description from the seller
An exceptional mid-to-late 19th-century Victorian cast iron umbrella and walking stick stand, perfect for adding authentic historical character to a hallway, porch, or entryway.
This heavily ornamented piece combines several classic 19th-century motifs, demonstrating the eclectic and dramatic design aesthetics of the Victorian era. It is a highly functional piece of antique hall furniture that doubles as a striking decorative object.
Design Details
The Base: Features a large, scalloped shell-shaped drip pan designed to catch rainwater. The stand rests securely on three splayed feet cast in a stylized foliate (leaf) pattern.
The Column & Brackets: Rising from the shell base are elaborate, symmetrical Rococo Revival C-scrolls and acanthus leaves. These support a central baluster-style column with textured reeding and fluting.
The Crown & Holders: The top of the stand is finished with a prominent fleur-de-lis finial. The retaining arms—designed to secure umbrellas or walking sticks—sweep outward and terminate in highly detailed, stylized snake heads, a popular and dramatic motif in Victorian decorative arts.
Condition
The stand is in authentic, un-restored antique condition. It is structurally sound, heavy, and robust. It features an older black painted finish with expected signs of age and use. There is natural dust accumulation in the deeper crevices and areas of surface rust, most notably within the basin of the shell drip tray (which is entirely consistent with its original, water-catching purpose). This wear contributes to a wonderful, genuine age-related patina.
