A superb and highly decorative Chinese architectural window panel dating to the Qing Dynasty, circa 1750–1800, originating from Southern China. Finely carved in deep openwork, the panel would originally have formed part of the interior decoration of a wealthy official’s residence, where such carvings reflected both status and refined taste.

The scene is richly detailed and depicts nine figures and one horse. At the centre is a mounted civil official, accompanied by a standing military official, five attendants, and two elegantly dressed ladies watching from a raised pavilion. The composition is enhanced by carved trees, architectural elements and decorative motifs, creating a lively narrative scene with remarkable depth and craftsmanship.

The panel retains its original natural Chinese lacquer and hand-applied genuine gilt decoration, both of which have developed a beautiful aged patina over more than two centuries. The combination of intricate openwork carving, original lacquer and gilding makes this an impressive example of Southern Chinese architectural ornament from the mid to late Qing period.

Condition:
Good antique condition overall. The panel retains its original lacquer and gilding with expected age-related wear and patina. There are several minor age-related shrinkage cracks to the wood, consistent with its age, but no significant structural damage.
