Description from the seller

Antique Chinese Famille Rose Covered Porcelain Box

Qing Dynasty, Daoguang–Tongzhi Period, circa 1840–1875

A finely painted Chinese famille rose porcelain covered box dating to the Qing Dynasty, Daoguang–Tongzhi period (circa 1840–1875). The domed cover is beautifully decorated with one elegant lady accompanied by four playful children, a traditional Chinese motif symbolising family prosperity, fertility and happiness.

The sides of both the cover and base are decorated with colourful scrolling floral vines interspersed with four large Chinese “Double Happiness” (囍) characters, one of the most auspicious symbols in Chinese culture, representing joy, marriage, harmony and good fortune.

The box is finely potted with a well-fitting domed cover and retains its original vibrant famille rose enamels. Such covered boxes were used to store cosmetics, incense, jewellery or other treasured small items, while also serving as elegant decorative objects in the home.

Dimensions:

* Height: 6.5 cm
* Diameter: 9.5 cm

Condition:
Good antique condition overall. The enamels remain bright with an attractive age-related patina. There are a few tiny nicks to the inner rim of the cover, together with expected age-related wear and minor firing imperfections consistent with age. No obvious restorations were observed. Please examine all photographs carefully, as they form an important part of the description.
