Our Samarkand rugs take their name from a traditional trading post in the Orient - the city of Samarkand in Uzbekistan. Samarkand rugs were handmade in the late 19th century by the renowned Swiss trading family Ziegler. Due to the political unrest of the Persian Empire and the strong Western demand for carpets, Ziegler decided to set up its own production in Sultanabad, Pakistan, and hire some of the best rug weavers to meet this growing demand. Samarkand rugs are woven in the finest handwork with about 350,000 knots / m2 and promise very high quality.
Today Samarkand rugs stand for exceptional quality and modern, Oriental-inspired patterns. The rugs draw their inspiration from classic Persian rug design. The wool used is of high quality and the color palette made from natural plant-based dyes is softer and more subtle than that of Persian rugs. The shorter pile makes it easy to keep the rug clean.
