Beautiful sphere of pyrite from Peru.

The origin of the name is Greek; pyrite derives from 'pyr', meaning fire.
In the past, due to its color, it was also known as 'fool's gold'.

It is a decidedly common mineral, formed of iron disulfide, with a golden color or tending toward light yellow.
