Description from the seller

Ancient Fang Akuré torque, cast in brass—bronze. These necklaces, known as “ngos” in the Fang language, were worn by women as a symbol of protection and spiritual connection; they could be heavy and ornate, and were fastened by hammering them shut at the necks of the women. Their main function was to ensure the husband’s return in case of leaving the home, making them valuable not only for personal use but also for their cultural and religious significance. Excellent natural patina from prolonged use.

Seller's Story

PRIMITIVE ART IN GENERAL, ESPECIALLY AFRICAN. ORIGINATING FROM PRIVATE COLLECTIONS OR ACQUIRED AT PROFESSIONAL GALLERIES OR INTERNATIONAL AUCTIONS.
