Akuré - Fang - Gabon

Ancient Fang Akuré torque, cast in brass-bronze. These necklaces, known as 'ngos' in Fang, were worn by women as a symbol of protection and spiritual connection; they could be heavy and ornate, and were closed with a hammer around the necks of the women. Their main function was to ensure the husband would return in case of abandonment of the home, which made them valuable not only for personal use but also for their cultural and religious significance.
