Description from the seller
Roman Bronze Oil Lamp – 1st–4th Century AD
An elegant Roman cast bronze oil lamp featuring a rounded reservoir, elongated nozzle and an ornate loop handle. The lamp retains an attractive dark olive-green archaeological patina developed over centuries. The removable lid is surmounted by a small standing human figure, a decorative element commonly found on high-quality Roman bronze lamps. Although the figurative finial is ancient, it is highly probable that the lid belongs to another Roman lamp, as slight differences in fit and manufacture suggest it was paired with this example at a later date. Despite this, both components appear to be authentic Roman bronze pieces and display consistent age and patination.
Material: Bronze
Dimensions: 11.4 × 6.7 × 4.4 cm
Weight: 156.7 g
Provenance: Acquired in France. Former German private collection assembled during the 1980s.
