African Dan dance mask from Ivory Coast in wood.
All Dan masks are sacred; they do not represent spirits, they are the spirits.
This type of mask is characteristic of the art of the Dan people (who live mainly in Ivory Coast and Liberia).
In Dan culture, masks are not simple decorative objects nor theatrical disguises: they are considered receptacles of forest spirits (du) that wish to interact with the human world and participate in the life of the community.
According to its specific form – here a mask with stretched and split eyes, sometimes described as a female mask or Deangle / Tankagle type – it fulfilled several major social and spiritual functions:
Initiation and education: These oval, gentle, serene-faced masks frequently appeared during initiation rituals in jungle camps. The mask bearer acted as an intermediary, came to supply the initiates with food from the village women, and imparted moral teachings to them.
Entertainment and social cohesion: Unlike the more aggressive justice masks (with round or tubular eyes), this type of mask often took part in public festivities. Through graceful dances, songs, and poems, it entertained the villagers, blessed the community, and strengthened social bonds.
Mediation and protection: The spirit embodied by the mask watched over the village. Outside of ceremonies, the inner face, with its patina of use and its perforations for attaching the headdress or the costume) sometimes received offerings and libations to activate and honor its protective spiritual power.
