Worth knowing and culture of the Batak on Samosir
Cultural center: The island is mainly inhabited by the Toba Batak ethnic group. They are known for their traditional wooden houses with distinctive curved gable roofs (called Jabu Batak).
Traditional, handwoven fabrics of the Batak on Samosir Island (in Lake Toba, Sumatra) are called Ulos. In German they are often referred to as Ulos cloths. These elaborately decorated fabrics are deeply rooted in the culture and are worn at all significant life events such as weddings, births, and funerals.
Meaning and production of the Ulos cloths: An Ulos is much more than just a piece of clothing; it is regarded as a symbol of warmth, blessing, and affection. Traditional production is done in elaborate handwork on a hip loom (backstrap loom). Here, the weavers interlace threads thread by thread into geometric patterns. Often traditional natural dyes are used as well. There are many different types and patterns of Ulos that differ in color, shape, and use:
Ulos Ragi Hotang: This cloth is traditionally used at weddings to wish the couple a long and stable marriage.
Ulos Mangiring: Often presented at the birth of the first child to symbolize health and luck.
Ulos Sibolang: A traditional shoulder cloth with great ceremonial significance.
