Masque Batcham from Cameroon, Bamileke, a wood object weighing 3 kg with dimensions 40 × 24 × 15 cm, in excellent condition, a reproduction.
Description from the seller
The Batcham mask is undoubtedly the most famous Cameroonian mask (and, incidentally, it regularly breaks records in specialized sales).
Mask and throne at once, the Batcham mask owes its notoriety to its very particular and complex shape executed around two axes, vertical and horizontal:
On the vertical plane, the mask unfolds around two symmetrical parts separated by a median crest, each part decorated with parallel curved grooves that represent the eyebrows. The eyes are positioned at the level where the second plane articulates; large and oval-shaped, "they recall those of amphibians, with a strange and unsettling fixation, opened onto the universe of death" (according to Louis Perrois in "la panthère et la mygale").
