URANIUM IN GLASS:
Uranium has been used to color glass since the 19th century. Generally, the proportion of uranium varies between trace levels and 2% by weight.
Uranium glass production ceased due to the strategic importance of uranium during World War II and the subsequent Cold War. Today we can find it in museums, antique shops or even in our homes!
After this brief introduction, let's get to science. The physical phenomenon that gives rise to that green glow is known as FLUORESCENCE and it is not of nuclear origin, but is due to the electrons that orbit the uranium nuclei.
Fluorescent materials are capable of absorbing high-energy photons (gamma rays, X-rays, UV rays, etc.) and, subsequently, emit part of that energy in the form of photons of different wavelengths, for example within the visible spectrum (green light, blue, etc.).
For gin and tonic lovers: Tonic is flavored with a substance called quinine, which is fluorescent. Hence your gin and tonic looks blue under certain lighting conditions.
