Description from the seller
Pair of Solid Brass Courtesy Mirrors in Cast Foundry – Antique/Baroque Style with Neptune Mascaron – Late 19th Century
Description of the lot:
Exceptional and rare pair of courtesy mirrors (or hanging mirrors) from the late 19th century (Napoleon III / Third Republic period, circa 1870-1890). Cast in heavy solid brass from a foundry, they are distinguished by their superb openwork Baroque-inspired décor. The central element of the composition is a magnificent relief-carved mascaron representing the mythological figure of the God Neptune (or Poseidon), crowned with rays and foliage.
Details, Ornamentation and Assembly:
The openwork frame features excellent chasing work with Baroque volutes, stylized floral motifs, and finely wrought rosettes.
The central mirrors have an architectural curved shape at the top. The original glasses possess an elegant beveled edge around the perimeter, characteristic of late 19th-century fine looking-glass craftsmanship.
The back reveals the original metal locking plates that securely hold the glass, as well as two suspension rings cast directly in the mass for secure wall mounting.
Condition:
The pieces are presented strictly in their original state ("as is"), with their magnificent antique patina attesting to their authenticity. The brass has deliberately not been cleaned or polished to preserve this precious historical charm (dark, contrasting tone, very light traces of natural verdigris tucked into the reliefs). The beveled glass shows a few light oxidation pinpricks and discreet micro-scratches typical for their age. No loss or breakage on the openwork frame.
Weight: 1.620 kg per mirror.
