Mambila of Cameroon. Item

The Mambila are a Central and West African people, mainly present in the southeast of Nigeria, but also on the other side of the border, in the northwest of Cameroon. Most live on the Mambila Plateau.
Among their most notable achievements are carved wooden figurines and helmet-masks, but especially pottery. These works are frequently used in therapeutic rituals.

Les Mambila sont un peuple d'Afrique centrale et de l'Ouest, surtout présent au sud-est du Nigeria, mais également de l'autre côté de la frontière, au nord-ouest du Cameroun. La plupart vivent sur le plateau de Mambila.
Parmi leurs réalisations les plus remarquables figurent notamment les statuettes en bois sculpté et les masques-casques, mais surtout des poteries. Ces œuvres sont fréquemment utilises dans des rituels thérapeutiques.
