De Klaauw - Wall plate - Stoneware - D. 36 cm / H. 5.5 cm

Large, hand-painted Delftware faience plate from the renowned Plateelbakkerij De Klaauw. The decoration shows, in the mirror, an elegant heron in a lush floral landscape, surrounded by finely executed feather and leaf ornamentation and a characteristic wavy edge with an ocher-colored outline. The high-quality cobalt-blue painting and the classical composition exemplify the premium Delftware faience production of this traditional manufactory.

On the back is the characteristic claw mark (“Een Klauw”), attributed to the De Klaauw manufactory. The style, execution, and the form of the brand mark indicate a creation at the transition from the 18th to the 19th century (ca. 1790–1810). The De Klaauw manufactory was among the most important Delft faience workshops and produced high-quality tin-glazed ceramic from 1661 to 1840. The claw mark was used as a factory mark and is documented in historical mark registers.

The heron motif is among the classical Dutch landscape and nature representations of this era and, together with the rich feather decor, forms a particularly decorative example of late classic Delftware. Comparable plates from De Klaauw’s production are found in museum collections and are mainly dated to 1770–1800; the design of this specimen suggests creation in the transitional period to the early 19th century.

The plate has no chips or cracks. Minor wear on the brown rim.

The item will be wrapped in padded foil and surrounded by bio-style Styrofoam in a double-walled box and shipped via DHL.
