Description from the seller

Manuscript
Maxims of French Law.
France, circa 1700–1715.
Small quarto, about 204 pp. handwritten manuscript, contemporary half-binding of brown calf, spine with five raised bands richly decorated, title piece “MAXIMES DU DROIT FRANÇAIS,” red edges. The manuscript is calligraphied in a single hand, preceded by a Preface and followed by an alphabetical table. The text develops the great maxims of public law of the Ancien Régime: The King never dies, The King holds his crown only from God and His sword, The King comes of age at fourteen, etc., with doctrinal references and citations from authors. Old laid paper with a figurative watermark, a uniform binding contemporary with the copy. A fine copy, complete, representative of the manuscript tradition of French law collections at the beginning of the 18th century, intended for the use of a practitioner or a legal library.”} } )?Oops.
