Description from the seller
Opening silver reliquary cross, engraved, 19th century
Opening silver reliquary cross, entirely hand-engraved on both faces with Christian symbolic motifs.
The obverse features the Marian monogram “M A” surrounding a Sacred Heart, while the reverse is adorned with the monogram IHS, emblem of Christ, accompanied by finely chased botanical motifs.
Both faces are also decorated with a patriarchal cross, sprigs and stylized elements evoking the hope and victory of Christ. The cross opens via a side hinge and closes with a small screw, revealing a compartment intended to receive a relic or a small devotional keepsake.
Today it is empty. Fine quality work, probably Italian, dating from the first half of the 19th century.
The silver has been tested.
Very good condition, full functionality of the hinge and the screw closure. Interior empty. Some light signs of wear consistent with age.
