Description from the seller
Very rare late Gothic wooden bust of a veiled woman – (Mary) probably circa 1800 – solid wood
This impressive wooden bust has been fully carved by hand from a single solid block of wood. The restrained, refined facial expression, the sober form, and the characteristic veil refer to the late Gothic sculpture tradition from Spain or neighboring regions.
The sculpture shows an exceptionally old patina, traces of original finish and natural aging that has developed over the centuries.
The rear reveals obvious cracks due to drying, old woodworm traces and an authentic, untouched texture, consistent with great age.
The bust is in an unrestored state with signs of use and age, including past woodworm activity, crack formation and wear.
It is precisely this untouched condition that makes the object interesting for collectors of early religious wood carving and old art.
Even if you do not attach value to the religious background, it is a beautiful masterpiece that continues to demand attention and reverence.
An exact identification of the depicted person is deliberately left to the future owner. The object is offered as an early religious wooden statue from the period 16th to early 17th century, without definitive attribution.
