Description from the seller
Virgin of the Lily – Parentani Bruxelles – polychrome plaster – Belgium – first half of the 20th century
Professionally shipped – more than 950 five-star reviews worldwide.
Polychrome depiction of Mary with a blooming lily branch, a symbol of purity. This model by Parentani bears the title "Vierge au Lys" on the front of the plinth. Mary is depicted with a lowered gaze and holds the lilies against her chest. Notable about this version is the finely modeled face. The lightly bent posture, the subtly painted eyes and the carefully defined features are among the strongest elements of this model. The dark blue mantle with gilded finish contrasts with the red garment.
Height 66 cm; in good condition with signs of use, local wear to the polychromy and a few small paint losses; signed GH Parentani Frères Bruxelles on the side and rear of the base.
G. & H. Parentani Frères was a Brussels workshop for religious statues and church ornaments, based in Vorst and active around 1900 and in the first half of the 20th century. The workshop produced among other things church statues, nativity scenes and devotional sculptures in plaster, intended for churches, schools and private devotion.
