Description from the seller
Immaculate Conception – plaster – J. Domisse - Belgium – Art Deco period, circa 1930
Professionally shipped – more than 950 five-star reviews worldwide.
Art Deco portrayal of the Immaculate Conception, executed in plaster to a design by Johannes Dommisse. The stylized design with long vertical lines, geometric folding, and simplified volumes aligns with religious sculpture from the interwar period. Mary is depicted with arms crossed over the chest and stands on a globe with a crescent moon and a serpent. Around the base there are undulating forms that symbolize the Earth and the waters of creation. The serpent refers to original sin, while the crescent moon is borrowed from the Apocalypse depiction of the Woman clothed with the sun.
Johannes Dommisse (1878–1955) was a sculptor born in Delft who was active in Brussels. He produced numerous religious sculptures and is among the leading representatives of religious Art Deco in Belgium. His work is characterized by a strongly simplified formal language and a pronounced verticality.
Height approximately 53 cm; marked Dommisse on the base. In good condition with signs of wear, small chips and light aging fitting the age and material.
Please take a good look at the photos, they are part of the description.
