Opal is a mineral from the mineral class of 'oxides and hydroxides'. As an amorphous solid, opal (like glass) has no crystal structure and typically appears as a massive vein filling or nodular formation.
Opals are processed exclusively into gemstones.
The word Opal was borrowed from the Latin opalus or the Greek ὀπάλλιος opallios meaning 'precious stone' and presumably goes back to upala in Sanskrit. According to Allan W. Eckert in his work The World of Opals, the term was used to denote various rocks, while the early Magyars called opal mines opálbánya.
Opals were already regarded in antiquity as particularly valuable gemstones, sometimes even valued higher than diamonds. Pliny the Elder wrote about it: '… it has its own fire, finer than that of the carbunculus, it possesses the purplish spark of the amethyst and the sea-green of the emerald and an utterly incredible mixture of light.'
