Paris

Ihei Kimura
Nora/1974/Japanese/195*270*40

Paris’ is a collection of photographs by Ihei Kimura, one of Japan's leading photographers. Ihei Kimura flew to Paris (and other European countries) three times in 1954, 1955 and 1960. This book is composed entirely of colour illustrations, which are a world apart from the black-and-white Paris captured by master photographers such as Henri Cartier-Bresson, Brassaï and Robert Doisneau, who were the leading French photographers with whom he interacted. At first, the unfamiliar light and climate prevented him from expressing the photographs he wanted, and he continued to shoot in chaos, but he continued to capture downtown Paris as introduced by Doisneau, who was also a downtown boy and a good match for the horse, resulting in a new style of work that was different from Ihei Kimura's conventional style. Paris, captured with a fresh sensibility by a photographer on a journey of heightened tension, is pale and beautiful. Published in 1974 by Norasha, of which photographer Kazuo Kitai was the head, this book is also the last collection of photographs left by Ihei Kimura before his death!
