Plate - Earthenware - Delft blue wall plate

A atmospheric and authentic Delftware earthenware wall plaque from the second half of the 19th century, richly decorated with a hand-painted depiction of an exotic bird perched on a blooming branch, set in an idyllic landscape with a bridge and a body of water. The graceful edge decoration and the characteristic blue-on-white color scheme beautifully align with the centuries-old tradition of Dutch Delftware.

Delftware has been renowned worldwide since the 17th century as Europe’s alternative to the expensive Chinese porcelain. Even in the 19th century, this tradition continued, with classic motifs such as birds, flowers, and landscapes being frequently used. The scene on this plaque is hand-painted and shows the lively brushwork that is typical of artisanal Delftware.

The back features a hand-painted monogram "AR". This mark is known as a non-uniquely identified pottery mark and is included by connoisseurs in listings of historical Delft marks that have not yet been fully assigned.
