Magnificent Fernandina console from the first half of the 19th century, executed in walnut veneer of exceptional quality. The piece fully reflects the models of the Fernandine period, a transitional moment between late neoclassicism and Romantic currents, characterized by structural solidity and the incorporation of decorative elements with strong sculptural impact.

Its design is organized around a clean-lined top, beneath which there is a hidden drawer in the skirting board, decorated on the front with an elegant marquetry of veneers that outline a double perimeter frame. However, the most distinctive feature of the console lies in its powerful front supports, carved in the shape of a kind of stylized dragons with long curved necks, a motif of great prestige in the decorative repertoire of the Empire and the Fernandine style. It is a distinguished, elegant, and highly decorative specimen, capable of taking a protagonist role both in a specialized collection and in a high-end interior.

The Fernandine style is a current of Spanish furniture and decorative arts developed during the reign of Ferdinand VII (1808 and, especially, 1814-1833), though its influence extended for several more decades. It constitutes an evolution of the French Empire style adapted to Spanish taste, combining the severities of 18th-century neoclassicism with a growing tendency toward Romanticism.

In furniture, it is characterized by robust, architectural forms, but enriched with decorative elements of strong expressiveness. Columns, pilasters, swans, sphinxes, griffins, lion heads, dolphins, and other figures inspired by both Classic Antiquity and the Napoleonic repertoire are common. The carving gains particular importance and is often integrated into the furniture’s own structure.

The preferred woods were mahogany, walnut, and other noble species, often with highly polished surfaces that enhance the beauty of the grain. The use of contrasts between light and dark woods, bronze accents, and relatively sober geometric marquetries is also common.
