Item Description
This is a Sony TC-K222ESJ stereo cassette deck, a highly regarded 3-head, closed-loop dual-capstan design with quartz-locked direct drive. The deck features Dolby B, C and S noise reduction along with HX Pro headroom extension, and it was awarded the 1992 Nagaoka Tetsuo FM fan Dynamic Grand Prix in the cassette deck category, reflecting its reputation for sound quality within Sony's later ES-series lineup.

The unit has undergone a full mechanical overhaul and restoration. Work carried out includes replacement of the capstan motor board capacitors, capstan belt and mode-change belt, supply-side pinch roller, and all tact switches behind the control buttons, along with disassembly and cleaning of the rotary encoder and leaf contacts. Head azimuth was adjusted and the tape path was checked and calibrated using a dedicated alignment gauge and mirror cassette, with a 120-minute test tape used to verify transport accuracy across the full tape length. Level adjustments were also carried out. The exterior, including the panel, lid cover, knobs, power cord and case screws, has been thoroughly cleaned, and standard maintenance such as contact and VR cleaning and head demagnetising has been performed.

A photocopy of the original instruction manual is included with this deck.

The deck has been powered on and basic operation has been confirmed. The recording/playback head shows good condition upon inspection.

Condition
The deck shows scratches on the case and on the right-side panel, consistent with age and use, while remaining in comparatively good overall condition. It has been serviced and tested, and powers on with basic operation confirmed.
