Set of two vintage wooden walking sticks from the United Kingdom, dating to 1940–1950, each 92 cm high, 12 cm wide and 3 cm deep, in good used condition with minor signs of aging, including one three‑part smuggler cane with a hidden removable drink tube and brass horsehead knop and one single-piece crook-handle cane with an ornate metal collar.
Description from the seller
Offered is a unique and highly decorative set of two vintage/antique wooden walking canes. Both canes have their own distinctive look and character, perfect for the collector of curiosities or as a stylish accessory.
1. Vintage System Cane with Hidden Drink Compartment (Smuggler’s Cane)
A fascinating object with a secret function! This three-part wooden walking cane features a finely detailed, heavy screw knob in the shape of a brass horse’s head.
The secret: When the brass horse head is unscrewed, a hidden, removable drinking tube (test-tube-style) revealed and equipped with a cork.
This type of canes, also known as smuggler canes or tippler’s canes, was historically used to discreetly carry a small sip of strong liquor to events such as horse races or the theatre.
Condition: The wooden shaft shows light, age-related signs of use that contribute to its vintage character. The screw threads operate smoothly and the bottle is intact. The bottom end is finished with a functional rubber stopper.
2. Classic Wooden Walking Cane with Crook Handle
A traditional, elegant one-piece wooden walking cane with a comfortably curved grip.
Details: The transition from the grip to the shaft features a gracefully worked metal collar/guard with detailed relief (possibly silver or tin alloy).
The bottom tapers to a narrow end and is fitted with an authentic, original metal point.
Condition: In good, used vintage condition with a beautiful patina on the wood and metal.
