White Tiger (Baihu): Guards the West. Represents autumn, the Metal element, courage and protection against evil.
Crimson Bird (Zhuque): Guards the South. Often associated with the phoenix, summer, the Fire element and rebirth.
Black Tortoise (Xuanwu): Guards the North. A combination of a turtle and a snake. Represents winter, the Water element, a long life and wisdom.
