A Night with Marilyn, who hasn’t dreamt of it or wouldn’t dream of it. This is what Douglas Kirkland, press photographer and on-set photographer, enjoyed with the camera in hand for a few hours in November 1961. For a start to his career, he could not have hoped for better than this encounter with this goddess of sensuality. A Night with Marilyn thus recounts that exceptional moment that fills an entire life, carrying with it a flood of memories, supported by images (about sixty). Here is the naked star, draped in silk, rolling, unfolding within the space of a bed. Suggestive images on full pages, punctuated by the photographer’s comments, spellbound, giving the impression of being swept away by a feminine whirlwind. Marilyn from behind, from the front, and in profile, seen from above, captured horizontally, sketched in close-ups, immortalized in the blur, emerging from the frame, radiant? For a bed and white sheets are the only setting of this staging prepared at the time for Look magazine. If the whole remains repetitive, it nevertheless remains a rare document, one of the very last devoted to the artist, who would take her own life eight months later.
