Description from the seller
Large carved bone altar model — monastic patience work, 19th century. Unique model.
Impressive miniature representing a church altar entirely made in carved bone, with remarkable finesse of execution.
The piece depicts a full altarpiece with central tabernacle, summit cross, steps, candelabra, liturgical lecterns, sacred vases, and altar rail. The openwork architectural decoration, very rich, is in a neo-Gothic vocabulary, with a multitude of miniaturized details executed by hand.
This type of work, known as a “patience piece,” is generally attributed to monastic workshops or nineteenth-century artisans, often in Alpine regions (Tyrol, Bavaria, Switzerland) or Central Europe. The quality and complexity of this piece clearly place it above common productions.
Dimensions: L 46 cm – H 45 cm
Material: carved bone (probably bovine bone)
Period: 19th century
Condition: good overall given the extreme fragility, with a few small losses and signs of wear.
Rare piece, with a strong decorative presence, ideal for a religious art collection or cabinet of curiosities.
