Henri d'Artois, Duke of Bordeaux, Count of Chambord (1820-1883)
Grandson of King Charles X, Henri d'Artois is better known by his courtesy title of Count of Chambord. From 1844 and until his death in 1883, the Legitimists recognize him as the prétendant to the Crown of France under the name Henri V.
- Exceptional first letter known from the last Bourbon -
Touching autograph letter written in brown graphite by the young Henri d'Artois, then only six years old. He addresses these few words full of tenderness to his under-governess, the Countess of Rivera, whom the royal children affectionately nicknamed “Ri”:
« I love my dear Ri
Henri. »
The young Duke of Bordeaux also penned by hand the address “To Ri” before the letter was folded and sealed.
On the verso appears an autograph annotation by the Countess of Rivera, specifying the date:
« Friday 20 October 1826 ».
This letter constitutes the oldest epistolary testimony currently known of Henri d'Artois. At the time of its drafting, the young prince was only six, and his grandfather, King Charles X, still ruled over France.
The Countess of Rivera, born Eugenia-Raymunda Baudon de Mony, was a lady of Franco-Spanish origin. The Duchess of Gontaut wrote of her: "Mme de Rivera never disappointed my expectations; always the same and without clouds, devoted, attentive with discretion and nobility, passionately loving for His Highness and for Mademoiselle, but without weakness: to devote oneself is the passion of her heart. She pleased the King, the Queen, and when the Dauphin came to know her better, he sincerely appreciated her. She would have given her life for this royal family which welcomed her with benevolent kindness. For me, who could discern her soul, she was a tender daughter, and I am happy to declare here that I feel toward her a maternal sentiment. For twenty-nine years that I have known her, I have never received a disappointment from her, and each year the feelings we have for one another grow stronger."
