One sculpted Nkisi Nkondi power statue in carved hardwood with metal nails and pegs, 90 cm high and 90 cm wide and deep, weighing 10 kg, a non‑stand representation from the Kongo culture of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, dating to the 20th century and presented as a reproduction in excellent condition.
Description from the seller
This impressive Nkisi Nkondi ritual statue is an emblematic work of the sacred art of the Kongo people in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Carved from hard wood with a well-worn patina of use, it is distinguished by its abundant fittings of nails and metal pegs, each driven in during a ritual to activate the figure’s spiritual powers.
The figure is depicted standing, in a frontal pose, with an expressive face, wide-open eyes and a slightly opened mouth, reflecting its role as guardian and intercessor between the world of the living and that of the ancestors. The elongated beaded neck, the feather-adorned hairstyle, and the raised arm holding an attribute reinforce its ceremonial character.
The abdomen houses a magical charge (bilongo), protected by a circular cavity, traditionally containing ritual substances meant to confer the nkisi its powers. The numerous nails, pins and pegs attest to its use during ceremonies related to justice, oaths, village protection, conflict resolution, or the drive against malevolent forces.
This sculpture presents a handsome ancient patina, traces of use consistent with its age and function, as well as a strong aesthetic presence that makes it a sought-after piece among collectors of traditional African art.
