Extremity of a Bamoun bone pipe from Cameroon, dating to the late 20th century, made of bovine bone with a wooden hat and a copper mouthpiece, three parts, 23 cm high, 7 cm wide and 7 cm deep, weighing 185 g, in good original condition, from a private collection.
Description from the seller
Beautiful end piece of a large Bamoun pipe carved from bovine bone. This part crowned the body of the pipe, which was composed of two sculpted dignitaries, unfortunately lost in a move.
These pipes are typical of Bamoun art from the highlands of the Grasslands in Cameroon.
It depicts a seated Bamoun dignitary and consists of a body carved and polished from bone; the head is topped with a wooden hat, referencing Bamoun hats, and it finishes with a copper mouthpiece. The condition is good.
It is made of three parts in bovine bone and the mouthpiece is wood. The bowl of the pipe is connected to the body by terracotta.
A sign of power in African art, these pipes were used by high dignitaries during assemblies around the king.
